Defense was a key factor in Boothbay’s 6-1 loss to Mt. Abram on Wednesday, May 1 in Boothbay. Seahawks starting pitcher Finn Harkins had a solid performance on the mound, but the defense committed three errors and gave up four unearned runs to an efficient Roadrunners team that took advantage of the miscues.
The score was tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, when the Seahawks defense faltered and Mt. Abram took advantage to surge to a 4-1 lead. The Roadrunners tacked on two more runs, one unearned, in the 7th inning off Seahawks relief pitcher Aidric Canada to put the game out of reach. “I think our team can beat anyone as soon as we start minimizing the errors,” said Boothbay head coach Ed Crocker.
The Seahawks offense hit the ball hard and had chances to score and build momentum, but the Mt. Abram defense shined in the win. Third baseman Bryce Wilcox made several outstanding plays to stymie Boothbay rallies, and center fielder Kaiden Longley made a diving catch over his shoulder in the fifth inning to snuff out a Seahawks scoring chance.
Liam Jacobs hit a double and two singles and knocked in a run to lead the Seahawks batters. Sam Markowitz (1R) and Maddox Cusumano each hit one single. The Seahawks dropped to 2-3 on the season with the loss, while Mt. Abram improved to 4-1.
Logan Dube (2SB) was the leading hitter for Mt. Abram, knocking in two runs and scoring one on a double and a single. Dube also pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Roadrunners, giving up just one run and striking out four in seven innings.
