Adam St. Cyr, 9, of Jefferson, traveled to Stroudsburg, Penn. to wrestle in the Phil Portuese North East Regional Freestyle and Greco championships last weekend. The regional competition attracts wrestlers from Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachussetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania.
St. Cyr took first place in freestyle April 29. He worked his way through a 16-man bracket, taking a bye in the first round before beating J. Horgner (PA) by 1-0 decision, R. Ferrara (NY) by 8-7 decision, and W. Detar (PA) in the championship round, 8-6.
On April 30, Adam took third in an eight-man Greco bracket. He pinned C. Waltenbaugh (PA), beat B. Fuller (PA) by tech fall, and lost by tech fall to R. Ferrara (NY).
This is the third straigth year St. Cyr has competed in the regional tournaments. He has accumulated an overall record of 15 wins and 2 losses in the three years. He has placed first in freestyle twice and second once. He has placed first in Greco twice and third once.
With the win, Adam will move on to the Kids Asics Nationals to be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta on June 29 and 30. He will be wrestling for All-American status (placing in the top eight at a national tournament) for the sixth time.
Adam is the son of Shawn and Jenn St. Cyr.
