Directions: Steele Woods is located on Rte. 1 in Newcastle, across the road and slightly south of the Sherman Lake rest stop. There is a small parking area off of Rte. 1.
The 60 acre Steele Woods in Newcastle is a wilderness haven located just off busy Rt. 1 in Newcastle. The land is privately owned by John Harris, but open to the public. The site is for sale, so interested hikers should take advantage of a scenic walk along the Marsh River, before it is sold, as new owners may not allow public access to this pristine property.
Three trails extend from the parking area, a gravel woods road to the right, a blue blazed gravel trail straight ahead, and a mowed grass trail (also blazed in blue) ahead and to the left.
To hike the woods in a giant loop, take the grassy trail on the left, which follows the contours of the picturesque Marsh River. Stay left at the branch and the trail stretches uphill to power lines, which offer a breathtaking view of Marsh River and the Rt. 1 bridge. The trail then heads down hill and follows the river.
Be sure to stop at the flat rock overlook on the river’s edge for peaceful views up and down the river. The trail continues along the river then turns sharply inland and up a steep hill. The trail comes to a T with the main woods road.
The yellow blazed trail to the left goes to the railroad tracks (where it ends). The blue blazed trail to the right is the main woods road, which heads back to the parking area. The trail back to the parking lot is steep in places, but levels out near the power lines, then heads uphill again, before a long decline to the parking area.
There is a blue blazed trail before the power lines, which is the center trail.
Plan on 45 minutes to walk the trails, longer if stopping to enjoy the views.
