Wiscasset High School boys’ basketball team opened their Mt.Valley Conference season with a 69-41 win over Carrabec Friday night on the road. After a slow start, Wiscasset went on a 25-13 run in the second period to lead 38-23 at the half. The Redskins never relinquished the lead after the first period.
“The team played pretty well defensively and wore them down. It was team effort,” coach Matt Cook said.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Josh Hopkins with a career high 23 points (11R), Jason Dennison 21 (10R), Sumner Averill 8, Cody Griffin 5, Jimmy Davis 5, Nick Hinkley 3 (6A,5S), Alex Slack 2 and Dylan Connors 2. Scoring for Carrabec were McCarthy 12 (4-3’s), Lane 9, Richard 9, Geno Houle 4, Pinkham 4 and Manser 3.
Hall-Dale scored the opening basket, but they would never lead again. Wiscasset took an 18-6 lead at the quarter break, they poured in 21 points in the second frame to lead 39-15 at the half. Noticeably absent was big man Jason Dennison, who had to sit out the game after drawing two technical fouls in the Carrabec game, the first for hanging on the rim and the second for inappropriate language.
“It was a great team effort both offensively and defensively. Cody Griffin had a great night defensively,” coach Matt Cook said.
The Redskins saw balanced scoring from 10 players. Nick Hinkley (6A), Griffin and Josh Hopkins (7R) scored 11 points each. Sumner Averill added 9, Josh Sonia 7, Alex Slack 7 (9R), Jim Davis 6, Dylan Connors 6, and Tyler Sonia and Mitchell DeCosta 2 each. Scoring for Hall-Dale were Nick Bickford 16, Ryan Leach 12, Brandon Gilbert 6, Damien MeInicove 5, Brad Longfellow 4, and Dylan Dupont, Tim Day and Danny Austin 2 each.
