Wiscasset lost a fifth player a little over a minute into the second half, when Kelsey Hammond went down with an ankle injury.
The game was closer than the score appears. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead six and a half minutes into the first half when Kristina Buck scored on a Katie Widerhorn feed. Wiscasset knotted the score three minutes later when Alli Johnson converted a pass from Haley Grant, in her first game of the season.
Hall-Dale took a 2-1 lead with 13:20 to go when Carylanne Wolfington blasted a shot of Wiscasset keeper Kasey Cromwell’s hands. Wiscasset missed wide on two shots before the half. In second half action, the Redskins missed wide on three shots, and Grant was stopped on a breakaway shot by Dog keeper Taylor Massey.
Cromwell and WHS defense stopped a flurry of shots with three minutes to play. Cromwell played tough in the scramble, stopping three or four shots while on the ground, and paid the price with a kick to the head, but managed to hold onto the ball. Hall-Dale’s Sarah Price converted a Wolfington pass with 2:03 to go with a high lofty shot over back-up keeper Grant.
Hall-Dale held a 25-8 edge in shots. Cromwell made 18 saves and Grant one for Wiscasset, and Massey made seven stops for the Bulldogs.
Lisbon held a 23-7 edge in shots, but were unable to beat Wiscasset keeper Kasey Cromwell who made nine saves. “Our defense played very well,” Hammond said. “Becca Slack, at midfield, contained their midfielder, who was very strong. Brianna Goud contained their striker. Our fullbacks did not come out all game. Cassandra Tardif, Michaela Trudeua and Abby Foster did a whale of a job back there.”
