Winless Wiscasset girls’ defense shines

Georges Valley 60 – Wiscasset 43Georges Valley girls’ basketball team defeated Wiscasset 60-43 in a change of date and venue on Monday. Wiscasset stayed with the Buccaneers in the first quarter, trailing 10-12, before Georges Valley scored 18 points in the second to take a 30-13 lead. The Bucs led 53-23 at the end of three.

Scoring for Wiscasset were Kayla Connors with a career high 18 (14R,5S,4B), Alli Johnson 12 (8R,3S), Heidi Pinkham 3, Maryellen True 3, Carolyn Footer 3 and Becca Slack 2. Scoring for Georges Valley were Jill Bradbury 15, Kennadi Grover 14, Julie Veilleux 12, Denneault 7, Rich 4, Brooks 2, Haskell 2, Frye 2, Beal 2 and McGeady 1. Hall-Dale 40 – Wiscasset 19Hall-Dale pulled away from Wiscasset in second half action to win 40-19 on Jan. 14. The Bulldogs led 4-0 at the quarter and 8-6 at the half. The score was tied three and a half minutes into the third quarter, before Hall-Dale pulled away. “I was really proud of our defense,” coach Patrick Quinn commented.

Scoring for Wiscasset were Connors 6 (12R), Slack 6 (4S), Footer 3, True 2 (9R) and Sam Sutter 2. Brianna Goud had 7 rebounds. Scoring for Hall-Dale were Carolyn Wolfington 16, Taylor Massey 7, Barden 6, Poland 6 and Buck 5. Winthrop 49 – Wiscasset 38 In make-up action on Jan. 5, Winthrop handed Wiscasset a 49-38 loss. The game was tied 10-10 at the quarter, and Wiscasset held a 20-18 lead at the half. The Ramblers led 31-26 going into the final period. “On the road we give people a good game, but at home we get embarrassed,” a perplexed coach Quinn commented.

Scoring for Wiscasset were Connors 16, Johnson 9, True 8, Goud 3 and Slack 2. Scoring for Winthrop were Nikki Scott 10, Kelly Mason 9, Sarah Warner 9, Shauna Carlson 7 and Sasha Flaherty 6.
