Wiscasset jumped on Winthrop early in a Western Maine Class C quarterfinal match-up at the Augusta Civic Center Monday night. Wiscasset dominated the boards (39-23) and held a double-digit lead from the first period, in a game never contested by the Ramblers. Wiscasset led 17-6 at the quarter, 32-16 at the half, 44-29 at the end of three, before going on to win 60-38.
The last time Wiscasset advanced to the West B tournament was in 2005.
Cody Griffin scored the opening hoop and Josh Sonia scored back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Redskins up 8-0. The two teams exchanged points, before Wiscasset rallied for seven straight points to lead by 11 at the end of three. Jason Dennison hit a foul shot and scored two inside shots, including a dunk in the rally.
Zach Farrington cut the lead to nine to open the second, but that was as close as Winthrop would come to the Redskins. Alex Slack scored on a Griffin feed, Nick Hinkley fed Griffin and Jimmy Davis, and Davis scored one at the line to put Wiscasset up by 16.
Trailing 40-21 in the 3rd, Winthrop made a run at Wiscasset to pull within 13 with an eight-2 spurt, sparked by seven steals. Dennison ended the quarter with a basket to give Wiscasset a 15-point lead going into the final period.
Wiscasset out scored Winthrop 16-9 in the final period to put the game out of reach of the Ramblers. Dennison scored a basket and went five for seven at the line in the final period.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Dennison 15 (13R,2S,1B,2A), J. Sonia 9 (3-3’s, 3R,2B), Griffin 8, Sumner Averill 6 (9R,3A), Alex Slack 6, Josh Hopkins 6 (6R), Hinkley 4 (10A,4R,1S,2 charges), Davis 3, Tyler Sonia 2, and Mitch DeCosta 1.
Scoring for Winthrop were David Ketchen 9, Andrew Smithgall 7, Zach Farrington 7, Cory Staples 6, Chad Morang 5, Skyler Whaley 2, and Billy Gordon 2.
The winner advances to the West C Regional championship to be played at ACC on Sat., Feb. 21 at 8:45 p.m.
