Wiscasset boys’ soccer team took on the best the Mt.Valley Conference had to offer this week, and came away with a 3-1 win over Dirigo and a scoreless tie against top seed St. Dominic. The Redskins remain undefeated with a 7-0-1 record going into the final three weeks of the season.
Wiscasset unleashed 28 shots in the second half, and their pressure paid off in a big way with a 3-1 win.
Ross Hanley knotted the score with 30:31 to play. Devin Grover banged a shot off the cross bar and Ashton Benn headed the rebound high, before Wiscasset took the lead with 8:12 to play.
Benn spun the ball away from a defender at the top of the 18, and pushed the ball out to John McLeod on the right wing. McLeod put a hard shot back against the grain just inside the left post. James Andretta headed in a cross from McLeod with 6:03 to play to put the game out of reach of the Cougars.
Wiscasset dominated play with a 42-2 edge in shots. Mason Brewer made one stop on a Ross breakaway in the second half. Caleb Turner made 27 saves in net for Dirigo.
“We’re passing the ball well. The boys are playing smart and giving me their best. With Brian Campbell out with a knee injury, Eddie Stewart, James Andretta, Ryan Hanley and Austin Haskell have come up big for us,” coach Wayne Benn said.
