Nine local teams competed in the 2018 Maine State Junior High & elementary Cheering championships at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on March 4. The Wiscasset Flare and Wiscasset Heat teams placed first in their divisions, and the Medomak Riverhawks and Jefferson Village Chargers placed second.
The win was the third straight for the Wiscasset Heat team, who won the Elite Cheer Challenge in Gorham on Sat., March 3, and won the Augusta State Capital Cheer Challenge on Feb. 10. Wiscasset Heat won an award at the Elite Cheer Challenge for Most Creative Stunting.
Other local teams competing were the Warren Rec Whiskers, Warren Rec Cubs, Warren Rec Panthers, Wiscasset Blaze and Great Salt Bay School.
Over 60 teams competed in the championships, the largest number in Calais Recreation Department’s 22 years of hosting the event.
