Wiscasset led from the opening basket in their 64-52 win over Madison in make-up action Saturday night in Wiscasset. Mason Brewer returned to the line-up after missing two games with a shoulder injury.
Ashton Benn scored the opening hoop off a Devin Grover feed, then sailed in a three- pointer to put Wiscasset up for good. Tyler Emerson scored for the Bulldogs, before Benn fed Mason Brewer and Danny Murphy on back-to-back hoops to give WHS a 9-2 lead. Madison pulled within two. Jordan Jones hit a big three and Grover settled two at the foul line to boost Wiscasset’s lead to seven.
Wiscasset led 21-12 at the quarter, 33-20 at the half and 46-36 at the end of three. The Bulldogs pulled within five with 4:50 to go in the game. Benn and Jones scored back-to- back hoops and assisted each other to boost the lead to nine. Madison’s challenge put a little fire in WHS’s belly that was lacking for much of the game. Tyler Sonia, Benn and Jones all scored off steals in the final two minutes of play.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Benn 19 (5A), Jones 13 (6S,5A), Grover 8 (3R,3A), Caleb Bryant 6 (5R), Murphy 6 (7R,2S,2A), Brewer 4 (9R), Jason Weatherbee 4 (3R,2S), Sonia 2 (2S) and Cory Hodgdon 2 (4R). Scoring for Madison were Seth Sweet 14 (5R,3S), Matt Soucy 11, Cody Briggs 9 (6R), Ian Hartigan 6 (8R), C. Tranten 4, Travis Emerson 4 (5R,3S), Matt McClintock 2 and Steve Lawrence 2.
Wiscasset boys are ranked fifth in West Class C with a 10-3 record. The top 10 teams in West C qualify for post-season play.
