Wiscasset boys’ basketball team rallied in 2nd half action to defeat Lincoln County rivals Boothbay 68-56 on Jan. 6. Wiscasset out-rebounded Boothbay 44-32 and took care of the ball in 2nd half action to pull out the come-from-behind win.
Boothbay controlled the boards in the 1st quarter to take a seven-point lead. Ashton Benn hit a big three-pointer to cut the lead to four 16-12 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Seahawks Robert Cronk and Jordan Caron opened the 2nd period with hoops to boost Boothbay’s lead to eight. Wiscasset pulled within one on a hoop from Mason Brewer, three-pointer from Tyler Sonia and foul shots from Cody Griffin and Devin Grover. Boothbay held on, taking a 25-21 lead into the halftime break.
The Redskins’ cold shooting hands warmed up in the 2nd half and they dominated the boards 10-3 to out-score Boothbay 27-15 in the 3rd quarter. Sonia gave Wiscasset the lead for good, and Jordan Jones hit back-to-back threes to give the Redskins a little cushion. Wiscasset led by as many as nine in the 3rd, and led 48-40 at the end of the quarter.
Mason Brewer gave Wiscasset their first double digit lead of the game with five and half minutes to play when he crashed the glass for two in the final quarter. DiMauro cut the lead to 8, before Brewer scored on a Griffin feed and Sonia off his own steal to boost Wiscasset’s lead to 12.
Scott Alley hit a big three, then settled two foul shots for Boothbay to cut the lead to seven with three minutes to play. Wiscasset spread the floor and clicked time off the clock, forcing Boothbay to foul. The Seahawks sent Wiscasset to the line nine times in the final two and half minutes of play, and Wiscasset made 10 of 16 foul shots to maintain the lead.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Griffin 15 (13R,2S,4A), Brewer 13 (13R,2S,1A), Jordan Jones 12 (6R,3A,1S), Tyler Sonia 11 (3R,2S,3A), Devin Grover 8, Ashton Benn 5 (3R,1S,2A), and Ben Jones 4 (2A). Scoring for Boothbay were Dan Dickinson 11 (3R,2S), Brian Hubbard 11 (6R), Alley 11 (5R,5S,2A), Caron 8 (4R,1B), Jake Simmons 7 (5r,2S,1B), DiMauro 5 (2R,2A,1B,1S), Cronk 2, and Ryan Murphy 2 (5R,2A,1S).
Hall-Dale went on an 11-2 run in the 3rd quarter to take an 11-point lead. Wiscasset scrambled back before the buzzer with eight straight points to pull within three going into the final period. Griffin converted off the glass, Devin Grover and Ashton Benn hit two at the foul line each, and Tyler Sonia hit a shot in the rally.
The Bulldogs boosted their lead to eight to open the final period on a three from Ryan Leach and hoop from Damian Meinicove. The two teams traded hoops, before Wiscasset rattled off seven straight to pull within one with 3:36 to go.
Mason Brewer hit a three-pointer and Griffin scored four points off the glass in the rally. Bulldog Leach responded with six straight points to lead by seven with 47 seconds to go.
Ashton Benn crashed the glass for two to cut the lead to five. Hall-Dale hit one of three foul shots in the final 30 seconds to give Wiscasset a fighting chance. Griffin hit one of two for Wiscasset. Hall-Dale inadvertently tipped the ball into Wiscasset’s net on a rebound with Grover collecting the two points to make it a three-point game.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Griffin 16 (14R,3B,2S,1A), Grover 10 (2S,1A), Brewer 10 (7R,3S,2A), Sonia 8 (2S,1A), Jordan Jones 5 (3R,2S), and Benn 4 (3R,1S).
Scoring for Hall-Dale were Leach 26 (6R,5S), McInicove 11 (12R), Brandon Gilbert 9 (5R), Tyler French 4, Zac Plummer 2, Sam Estes 2, and Ben Garrant 2.
Georges Valley led 9-6 at the quarter, 24-13 at the half and 37-21 at the end of three. Scoring for Wiscasset were Sonia 9, Brewer 7, J. Jones 4, Grover 4, Benn 3, and Griffin 2. Scoring for the Bucs were Cross 14, Garrison 12, Maloney 12, Cline 6, Young 2, and Wallace 2.
