Wiscasset boys’ soccer team snapped a three game losing streak this week with three straight wins to improve their record to 6-4-1. The Redskins out scored their opponents 15-3 in the three victories. Wiscasset defeated Georges Valley 4-0, Lisbon 5-2 and Hall-Dale 6-1.
Wiscasset held a 24-6 edge in shots in the lopsided contest that saw the Redskins empty their bench in the 2nd half. Mason Brewer made one save and Jason Weatherbee two in the net for the Redskins. Zach McNaughton and Joe Shagoury made four saves each for the Bulldogs.
Wiscasset boys’ soccer team 1st half offensive wave swamped the Buccaneers on Oct. 1 before they knew what hit them. The Redskins had to replace their goal minutes before the start of the game when officials condemned the one in place. They lugged a goal up from the lower field, hoisted it over the fence and set it in place. The new goal proved lucky for Wiscasset, as they scored four goals in the 1st half.
Tyler Sonia worked a give and go with Cody Griffin less than five minutes into the contest to give Wiscasset a 1-0 lead. Ashton Benn converted a free kick from Danny Murphy eight minutes into the contest. Griffin scored the third goal of the night after stealing the ball at midfield and working a nifty passing series with Sonia and John McLeod. McLeod collected the assist. Griffin struck again with 11 minutes left in the half on a Sonia chip to the box, that Griffin corralled off keeper Alec Young and walked into the net.
After dominating the 1st half (19-6 advantage in shots), the two squads battled evenly in the second in a midfield battle. Wiscasset’s bench saw ample playing time. Mason Brewer came up with two big diving saves late in the half to preserve the shutout.
Wiscasset held a 29-13 edge in shots. Brewer made 12 saves for Wiscasset and Young 16 for the Bucs.
“We played our best 1st half of the year. We pressured the ball well, passed the ball well; it was a total team effort. It’s a victory we needed, we’ve given too many away,” coach Wayne Benn said.
The 2nd half belonged to the Redskins, as they piled in three goals to win 5-2. Brian Campbell scored two, the first on a pass from Benn, and the second on a left-footed boot from 12 yards out. John McLeod scored the fifth goal when he received the ball at midfield and dribbled down for a shot from 10 yards out.
Wiscasset held a 16-6 edge in shots. Mason Brewer made three saves for Wiscasset, and Ethan Audie, seven for Lisbon.
