The Wiscasset Unsinkables swim team had 47 athletes compete in the Swim-Your-Own-Age meet held in Westbrook Jan. 16. and 17.
Three team records were broken at this meet. Ben Milliken (10) broke two records in the 100 IM in 1:18.85 and the 50 Fly in 34.46 seconds. Ross Hanley (16) broke the 100 Fly record in 58.70 seconds. The #1 Loser for this meet was Valeska Vaughan, taking a combined total of 40.56 seconds off her personal best times.
The Unsinkables had nine athletes winning trophies in their respective age groups. For each event points were awarded according to where the athlete finishes in each event. A perfect score is equivalent to 120 points which means the swimmer placed 1st in every event. Vanessa Albert (6) took 1st place with 114 points for the 6-year-old girls.
The Unsinkables 6-year-old boys made a sweep of taking the top four places in this age group. Henry Currier (6) took 1st place with 55 points, Benji Pugh (6) took 2nd place with 54 points, Nathaniel Jewett (5) took 3rd place with 48 points, and Andrew Nery (6) placed 4th with 30 points.
In the 7-year-old girls Lizzie Ober took 1st place with 109 points. Tyler Strempke-Ussery placed 3rd in the 8-year-old boys with 86 points. Noah Jordan placed 3rd in the 9-year-old boys with 99 points and in the 10-year-old boys Ben Milliken took 1st place with 114 points.
On Feb. 7 many Unsinkables athletes really challenged themselves at the Tuffin Up meet held in Bath. This is a meet where athletes are challenged with longer events such as the 1650 Free, the 500 Free, or the 400 IM to name a few.
The Unsinkables team had three team records broken at this meet. Briana Goud (13) broke the 400 IM record with a time of 6:10.48. Ben Milliken (10) swam the 100 Back in 1:17.69 breaking his own record and broke the 200 IM record with a time of 2:56.03. The #1 Loser was Brandon Goud with 54.96 seconds taken off his 500 Free. Tyler Strempke-Ussery (8) and Julia West (12) were Golden Goggle winners by swimming personal best times in all events.
There are only two more meets, Bronze/8 & Under Championship Meet and Last Ditch Meet, before the state championship meet at Bowdoin College in March.
