Lincoln Academy boys’ lacrosse coach George Workman was named KVAC Coach of the Year. Workman has coached at Lincoln for nine years, including as varsity coach for the past three years.
The Eagles won the KVAC championship his first year coaching in 2007 with a 13-2 record. Lincoln missed the KVAC playoff game by one loss last year and went 11-4. This year Lincoln is a .500 team, but has kept their opponents’ offensive numbers low with stellar defense.
Workman was a volunteer coach for the first two years, helping head coach Keith Rendall get the program off the ground. He was then JV and assistant coach for four years.
In other lacrosse news this week, Workman announced he is resigning his coaching position after this season. “This is a really busy time for my business. I am having difficulty making the commitment.”
He also cited a reason for his leaving was “the difficulty in running a team when you don’t have the proper facilities. There is a lot of difficulty with no field, especially early in the season with no outside practices.”
With no practice field in wet conditions, Workman has run practices in a loaned horse pasture for a couple of weeks in pre-season. “It has rough sloping terrain. It’s risky with the kids running through ruts. Sometimes we play in our first and second game without having an outside practice on the field.”
“It is an awful lot of work to juggle the practice schedule and the logistics of getting kids to the horse pasture. If it rains, we cannot use the practice field. Lincoln Academy has a real need for a decent sports field,” Workman added.
