Because of the low number of girls who came out for the joined Varsity and Junior Varsity squads this year, Medomak ended up with a Varsity team of 24 girls, coached by Owen Campbell and JV coach Jasmine McNelly. These 24 players made up the Varsity, swing, and JV teams, causing many of them to play a full Varsity game followed by a full JV game, that’s about 2 hours of straight soccer.
Other schools struggled with numbers as well, because there was a great shortage of JV teams in the league this year. The Medomak Valley JV team was only able to play half of the usually scheduled season games, but the team ended the season with a record of 7-0, playing games against Camden winning 5-1 & 2-0, Winslow 3-0, Maranacook 2-0, Erskine, Belfast 3-0, and finally Gardner 4-0.
“We had such an enthusiastic team, they were goal hungry and wanted to keep playing even when games were cut short because of loss of daylight. They had something every coach hopes for and that’s a team with good attitudes and a love for playing the game.” JV coach Jasmine McNelly.
Goals were scored by freshmen: lead scorer, Vanessa Davis with 7 goals, Alanna Vose with 2, Julie Ennamoratti with 1, and Emily Sirriani with 1; sophomores: Kasey Benner with 1, and Roxanne Jelenfy with; juniors: Danielle Dyer with 1, and Taylor Keefe with 1 goal and 1 assist; and seniors: Ashley Coburn with 3 and the varsity goalie Rachel Keefe with 1.
On the defensive end, the team was anchored by goalie Erika Kristensen, juniors: Kristen Ames, Samantha Soule, and Chelsey Coburn. sophomores: Courtney Leach, Haley Turner, and Kelly Leidenroth and freshman Mallory Conary.
“Our team showed great determination and an eagerness to learn and play the game well…I saw definite improvement in their soccer skills throughout the fall and now look forward to another great season next year!” Jasmine McNelly.
