The Wiscasset Community Center was hopping Saturday afternoon, as 60 people packed into their gymnasium to participate in the Zumbathon for Haiti.
“It was great, we had a great outcome. Everyone had great energy and had fun. It turned out to be a great event,” Zumba instructor Johanna Lovendale said of the Zumbathon that raised $989 for Haiti earthquake relief.
Participants ranged in age from five (twins Ameliah and Lucy Olsen) to 70, and included a few men. Zumba is 90 percent Latin dance, and is stepped to high energy Latin American and International rhythms and dance music. Zumba instructor Johanna Lovendale organized the event.
“Zumba is good for any level, you do not have to be a dancer. The focus is on fitness and in having a good time. Zumba is the biggest thing in fitness right now,” Lovendale said.
The event was sponsored by WCC staff, the Cordero family, DownEast Energy, Building Supply, Brunswick Martial Arts Academy, Transcend Wellness Massage & Skin Care, Body by Nadene, The Running Company, Headquarters Hair Salon, and Zumba fitness instructors Wendy Cordero, Isaura Sanders, Nadine Tafel, Antonio Garreton and guest instructors.
“I really appreciate the help from Wiscasset Community Center, the instructors and all the participants,” Lovendale said.
