Merely replacing fuel burning with electricity can cut energy consumption by up to a third. The savings accrue because there are no chimney/stack losses. However if the electricity comes from a fossil-fueled power plant, the savings are illusory: we only move the stack losses back to the generating plant. So, to fully realize this massive energy and cost savings, the electricity we convert to must be generated by wind, water, or solar power. How could this work out in our 1920s vintage house? As a solar researcher since 1973, I was eager to find out.
