Teacher Charles Besse plays baseball with students at the original Jefferson Village School. Notice that the bats are boards and there are no gloves to be seen. The school building is still standing across from the apartment building in the village. The home in the background remains a private home. The photo is one of almost 50 photos in the Jefferson Historical Societys 2020 calendar showing Jefferson residents having fun through the years. (Photo courtesy Ralph Bond)
The Jefferson Historical Society’s 2020 calendar will be available for sale for $10 at the Jefferson Fire & Rescue turkey dinner Saturday, Nov. 9.
The calendar features almost 50 photos of local people having fun in years past. Picnics, parades, going to the beach and fairs, winter and summer sports, and just clowning around are just a few of the ways that people spent their leisure time.
Most photos are fully identified, but the Jefferson Historical Society hopes that the public might be able to help with the identification of some that are not.
Family names represented include Achorn, Avery, Besse, Bond, Brann, Bryant, Burnheimer, Chamblee, Dow, Fish, Flagg, Glidden, Hallowell, Hodgkins, Hom, Hunt, Jackson, Jago, Johnson, Johnston, Leadbeater, Libby, King, Madden, Marden, Meserve, Morrill, Nash, Orff, Packard, Richardson, Sidelinger, Sylvester, Tibbetts, and Turner.
The calendar is sponsored by many Jefferson businesses. Next year, the theme will be “Having Fun” and the public is always invited to share their photos of the past. For more information, call 549-5258 or 549-5592.
