On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., abstract painter Jaap Eduard Helder will hold a holiday open studio and sale at his art studio, located at 49 Main St. in Damariscotta, upstairs above Fisherman’s Catch Seafood Market.
Helder’s December open studio, at which refreshments will be served, will celebrate his one-year anniversary of being at his current Damariscotta studio location, after moving to Round Pond from Belfast.
“It’s been 12 months and I’ve created colorful, energetic, abstract paintings (in that time),” said Helder, who started working in the studio last December. “It’s been a really nice year. Living on the water in Round Pond opened up my vistas, made a difference in my work.”
Helder’s textural painting technique typically involves the use of many layers of paint scraped and sanded down to achieve the final, intriguing effect.
Helder’s art can also be seen in the “Curator’s Selection” show at the George Marshall Store Gallery, 140 Lindsay Road, York, which runs through Friday, Dec. 20. In July, he will have a solo show at Studio 53 Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor.
