Grants of up to $20,000 are available through the Maine Community Foundation to help nonprofits implement energy efficiency measures in historic buildings they own. The community foundation’s Belvedere Historic Preservation and Energy Efficiency Fund typically awards approximately $250,000 per year for the restoration of historic buildings. The program will expand in 2018 to award an additional $100,000 each year for energy efficiency projects in historic buildings.

Volunteers Needed for Rotary-Lions Food Pack
The fourth Damariscotta Rotary-Lions nonperishable food pack will take place on Saturday, April 14 from noon-4 p.m. at the Central Lincoln County YMCA in Damariscotta. One hundred volunteers from the community will be needed in order to successfully pack and box 20,000 meals of macaroni and cheese, and tomato and rice. Boxes will be distributed to area food pantries.

Beekeeping Classes to Begin in February
The Knox Lincoln County Beekeepers Association is offering its annual bee school to individuals interested in learning more about keeping bees. Instructors of the classes are members of the association. In addition, the Maine State Apiarist will speak one evening on honey bee pests and pest management.
Dow Reminds Constituents to Search Unclaimed Property List, Claim Money
Sen. Dana Dow, R-Waldoboro, announced on Thursday, Jan. 25 the addition of $11.6 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund. This property consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners. The last known owner’s information is now available at maine.gov/unclaimed. In total, the Office of the State Treasurer has more than $241 million of unclaimed property.

The Waldoboro Woman’s Club met at noon on Jan. 9 at the VFW hall on Mill Street in Waldoboro. The hostesses were Betty Studley, Jean Lawrence, and Nancy Gault. Judi Lawrence, president, led the business meeting.

Volunteers Needed to Reach Out to Isolated Seniors
This has been a difficult winter, especially for seniors in the community who are living alone. Members of the community are encouraged to reach out to the elderly neighbors they know and to meet new neighbors by volunteering. The Catholic Charities SEARCH Program of Greater Bath and Lincoln County is looking for volunteers to assist seniors in Wiscasset, Damariscotta, Nobleboro, Pemaquid peninsula towns (Bristol, South Bristol, Bremen), and the Boothbay region.
Class on Teaching Mindfulness to Children
Children can benefit from practicing mindfulness just as much as adults can. On Monday, Feb. 12 from 6-7:30 p.m., a class will be held at the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta and at the LincolnHealth – St. Andrews Campus in Boothbay Harbor to learn how a consistent mindfulness practice can help children build emotional regulation skills, focus, and empathy.
Benefit Dinner Postponed
The Knights of Columbus benefit dinner that was supposed to be held on Saturday, Feb. 17 in the hall of St. Denis Catholic Church hall in Whitefield has been postponed to a spring date yet to be announced.
Work Plan for Area Bridge and Road Projects Unveiled
Sen. Eloise Vitelli, D-Arrowsic, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge, and other transportation projects throughout the state.
Newcastle Native Hikes Appalachian Trail with Rooster
Heather Bolint, a Newcastle native and Lincoln Academy graduate of 2004, recently completed one of her lifelong dreams: to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. Bolint was introduced to this idea while reading Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” as a book assignment in Patti Sims’ English class at Lincoln. Since then, the notion had always been on the back of her mind as something that she dreamed of doing “someday.”

Despite the weather conditions, Lincoln County Publishing Co. will still welcome the community for a firsthand look at how The Lincoln County News gets printed during an open house from 5-7 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, Jan. 17. The event is free and open to all.
