Energy Matters Who subsidizes whom?

Those opposed to solar power in Maine routinely claim that roofs with PV panels are in effect subsidized by ratepayers who do not have solar systems. According to new Boston University research, the exact opposite is true.

Edgecomb

Number 4 Congo Church Summer Supper is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 20. According to Bob Hardina, this supper will benefit the new Bargain Barn at the H.O.M.E. co-op in Orland. The Edgecomb Community Church has been working with H.O.M.E. since 2001, and on several occasions has held work camps, building homes for low-income families and upgrading the physical facilities on the H.O.M.E. campus. The current project is a cooperative venture by area volunteers to provide the electrical service, light, and power for the new thrift store. The Bargain Barn not only provides high-quality clothing, furniture, and appliances for residents of Hancock County, but it also provides an income stream to fund the many programs at H.O.M.E.

Willow Grange

July 28 found a small band of Grangers at the hall for our regular program. The potluck supper was macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti with a meat sauce, followed by German chocolate birthday cake for Errol, Joanne, and Deborah. Ice cream had been brought as a coincidence, also chocolate chip cookies. The legislative chair says the Libertarian party did not do a good job of providing their presidential publicity and there is no viable third party alternative for president, so choose the lesser of two evils. The agriculture chair states irrigated fields are being productive, so visit one of your local farm stands. Someone piped up that Bangor Fair is happening. The community service chair is thankful for the donated paper but would appreciate help putting a report together before August 15 for state judging. The card party for July 29 was discussed, if it should be cancelled, but it was decided to go ahead; thanks for offering to host Joanne.

Several years ago, while vacationing in Prince Edward Island, we came across a terrific rainbow kite made by Premier Kites. Ever since that trip, the Power Sled 14 has been the official kite of the Coastal Economist. It is easy to fly and handles quite a range of wind speeds.

I had the honor of being the guest speaker at a meeting of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Commentary: Frances Perkins and the Health Care Struggle

In February 1933, Franklin Roosevelt and Frances Perkins met in Roosevelt’s New York City home. The president-elect wanted his colleague in the New York state government to become the nation’s secretary of labor. Perkins would not accept this position unless she could pursue the goals important to her. These goals were breathtaking. The list included a minimum wage, maximum-hour laws, workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, a public employment service, public works, a child labor ban, health insurance, and old age pensions.

Net Metering

On July 22, the governor’s energy office recommended to the Maine Public Utilities Commission that net metering be discontinued as soon as possible. Net metering is the only Maine incentive that we have to install solar panels and thus help cut our dependence on fossil fuels. The rest of the New England states have given their citizens many reasons to go solar.

There is a new look at Hodgdon Green – an attractive and convenient front walkway and steps. Rego Stoneworks, of Alna, provided the craftsmen, and their work is contributing to the safety of residents and visitors alike as they enter this gracious home.

This is going to be another one of those bear-with-me kinds of columns as I am two weeks out and, being the summer season, there is a lot to report on. So here we go!

View From Over the Hill Surviving Hard Times

Right in the depths of the Great Depression, my folks bought this farm for $658 with a 15-year mortgage. That took courage when things were so desperate. Then voila! Pearl Harbor was attacked and we were at war overnight with hiring calls out to all skills. Pappa landed a job at Hyde Windlass in West Bath. We were suddenly in cash and so was everyone else. I remember Pappa’s check after deductions was $72.50 a week, honest to God.
