While the leaves haven’t yet turned their orange hue, it’s hard not to envision fall as the students of Lincoln County return to school in the coming weeks.
Characters of the County: Among Boats and Buttons, Bobo Hachmeister is Free
When Bobo Hachmeister first saw a photo of Waldoboro’s former Paragon button factory — all five stories and roughly 25,000 square feet of it — he was paging through a boating magazine at home in Beaufort, N.C., where he lived at the time. An aerial photograph showing the building and the Medomak River first caught his eye. The factory was listed as “for sale.”
Please Start Asking Questions
If you are like the majority of folks I talk to, you probably have not been following the details of the proposed Occupational Safety and Health Administration Emergency Response Rulemaking (https://www.osha.gov/emergency-response/rulemaking) that has a public hearing Nov. 12.
Newcastle History On Its Way To The Sheepscot
Congratulations to Linda Bailey on her winning picture in The Lincoln County News photo contest for the year 2023. Her picture was taken in the snow at Kerr Brook. I was happy to see it. It brings back many pleasant memories to me. It was a part of my youth. I haven’t been there for 70 years.
Bringing Food Home WIC and the Farmers Market Nutrition Program
In efforts to highlight all the state benefits that support nutrition while increasing spending with farmers (like SNAP and Maine Harvest Bucks, Farm Fresh Rewards, and the Maine Senior FarmShare Program), let’s look at the Maine Women, Infants, and Children Program, aka WIC, and the seasonal benefit called the Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
COMMUNITY SURVEY, THE RESULTS ARE IN
Thank you to all who recently completed the community survey. This survey was important for us at the paper to help form plans for the future, to identify areas that need attention, and to garner ideas for how to improve our service to the community.
Characters of the County: Laura Slye: Be Prepared to Break a Few Bones
A resident of Waldoboro, Laura Slye has been living and breathing boats since “day one.”
Sole and Tread PSAC and the Comp Plan
PSAC, as you may recall, is the Public Safety and Accessibility Collaborative, which contributes this “Sole and Tread” column, addressing such matters as safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists in the local area. What is the plan of the title?
Bringing Food Home Twin Village Food Bank Farm
Thursday mornings my coworker and I head to Twin Villages Food Bank Farm on Belvedere Road in Damariscotta for a few hours of work. We are greeted by Sara Cawthon who started this farm with her partner, Megan Taft, in the Salt Bay Farm fields donated by Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust.
CANCELLATION AND COINCIDENCE
The Carpenter’s Boatshop was going to conduct a fundraiser by having the former CIA director, John Brennan, speak at The Lincoln Theater on July 29. Former cabinet officials make public appearances all the time but rarely so in Lincoln County and frankly we don’t know if one of the nation’s former top spies has ever made a local appearance.
Characters of the County: Next Steps for Kristie Houghton
While Kristie Houghton’s high school self may not have been ecstatic over her long career of teaching, the community has been nothing but positively impacted by Houghton’s drive and enthusiasm.
Community Choice: Paging Lincoln County: What it’s Like to Work as a Dispatcher
“Nine-one-one, what’s the address you’re calling from,” asks Regan Pearce, a dispatcher at the Lincoln County Communications Center in Wiscasset.
Thrifty Good Good Cold Refreshing Soups
As we approach August on the cusp of a steamy July, cold soups become welcome partners in planning refreshing meals. On hot days, a cold soup can remarkably revive flagging appetites, while remaining light and satisfying. Many of them require minimal cooking and are perfect for meals that can be made ahead.
WELCOME, AUGUST
Wow, that was fast.
Just yesterday it seems we were in the throes of town meeting season and now back-to-school sales are upon us.
