Members of the medical staff of Miles Memorial Hospital support the continued fluoridation of the community water supply.

We have heard a lot of back and forth about the value of adding fluoride to the community’s water supply in the weeks leading up to the referendum vote on the issue in Newcastle and Damariscotta, Nov. 8

I certainly applaud the good intentions and information of the dentists speaking out in favor of fluoride. Clearly there is some support for their position, if mainly for children rather than adults.

I take great exception to the letter to the editor published Sept. 22, 2011 written by Carl Scheiman. (“Support for theology at the expense of humanity,” Page 4.)

Instead of suspending students for wearing and refusing to remove their breast cancer awareness bracelets, Medomak Valley High School administrators should be celebrating the students’ involvement.

I am saddened by the Obama administration’s position on the economy.

I have always been proud to be a Great Salt Bay parent, and have been singing the school’s praises for the eight years my children have been students there. Now the research backs up my parental enthusiasm.

In November, Damariscotta and Newcastle residents, who share a municipal water system, will vote on whether to retain fluoride in that system.

We live in an interesting time when the need for public relief is as great as it has ever been, greater by volume than even the famed Great Depression; at the same time the shared resources for helping the public are stretched thinner than ever.

A letter by Mr. Galen Rose speaks of what makes sense and does not. (“Faith, not ‘sense’,” LCN, 9/15/11, Page 4).

In November, residents in Newcastle and Damariscotta will have an important decision to make – to vote on whether or not to continue adding fluoride to the municipal water supply. This is a significant issue that deserves the thoughtful attention of every member of the community and participation of all eligible voters.

I am writing to applaud Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett for going out of his way to assist me.
