To the Editor:
Regarding the commentary “Should the state or federal government manage our recreational fisheries” by Rep. Leila Percy that ran in the 2/11/10 edition, I think some clarification is in order.
A New Year For Parents
For many parents, 2009 was a year in which they watched good things happening in the lives of their children. Our schools are helping students eat healthier foods. There’s greater opportunity for children to be engaged in sports, music, dance or arts. Social events and networking keeps them connected their friends.
COMING TOGETHER
Just about every week in our area, someone is holding a fundraiser for someone or something.
It could be a capital improvement project, it could be a school related trip, or it could be to help a neighbor in need. There is seemingly no end to the good causes that cry out for support.
How To Combat Birds Flying Into Airplane Engines
A friend of mine called me last week and told me that he had been working on the development of conceivable ways and means that hopefully, once and for all, would eliminate a world-wide problem plaguing the airline industry: birds flying into airplane engines with dire consequences.
WHERE IT’S DUE
Anyone in the business of responding to emergencies knows that seven minutes can literally mean the difference between life and death.

I was driving past Puffin Stop on Saturday, and noticed gas went from $2.81 to $2.89 a gallon, up eight-cents over night.

GOING AND GONE
Well, we won’t have Mary Bowers to kick around anymore. Looks like we won’t have Arthur Faucher to dust up, either.
Town managers and municipal superintendents walk a particularly fine line because they are responsible to the public and they usually serve at the whims of a board. They are the public face of their organization; the front line, rarely getting credit for good decisions and usually fielding an inordinate amount of grief for the bad ones.

I would like to extend my gratitude to Sen. David Trahan (R-Waldoboro) for all his hard work during the past year creating and introducing a bill that would have implemented a free saltwater fishing license in Maine.
Make Maine A Safer Place
To the Editor:
Recently in Gardiner, four kittens were found in a box on a snow bank, frozen to each other and barely alive. Thanks to Good Samaritans and the animal shelter, they received veterinary care. However, many less fortunate animals do not receive help in time.
