According to Selectman David Abbott, the Alna Board of Selectmen sent a letter to the Maine Dept. of Transportation (DOT) in support of continuing research into a possible Wiscasset bypass.
“While I’m personally not in support of a bypass, the town is. I feel it’s my duty to represent our residents appropriately,” Abbott said.
In other Alna news, the town will be convening a broadband committee on Thurs., Jan. 13 to pursue funding through Connect ME, a federally funded program that pays the cost of wiring rural areas for Internet access.
The town currently has several areas that are unable to receive broadband, which forces residents to use standard phone connections for their Internet needs. Alna selectmen had previously met with representatives from Tidewater Telecom in Nobleboro to discuss how the company could possibly wire the town. Abbot said Tidewater had handled a large swath of Edgecomb, who had received funding from Connect ME, with excellent results.
“Tidewater is local and it’s nice to talk to someone close,” he said.
After a brief debate over the past two weeks, selectmen extended the snowplowing contract of Mark Hanley for another year. The Alna Board of Selectmen is scheduled to meet next on Thurs., Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
