The Waldoboro Board of Selectmen’s Feb. 23 meeting started on a somber note, as the board accepted the resignation of Selectman John Blamey.
Blamey served on the board of selectmen until he was diagnosed with cancer. He submitted the following letter of resignation:
“Dear Chairman and Board,
I am resigning effective your approval of this letter.
It is not fair to the board, Town Manager or, especially, the voters, to have a selectman who does not attend the meetings.
I have enjoyed representing the citizens of Waldoboro and the Board and Staff. But full recovery is not assured, so I think it is best to resign in time to get a petition signed before the June ballot is printed.
Sincerely,
John T. Blamey
Selectman”
Chairman of the board of selectmen Clinton Collamore read the letter to a silent board.
“I’m breaking up just reading this,” Collamore said. “He’s been a good friend to a lot of us.”
The board reluctantly approved his resignation with a unanimous vote.
“The citizens of Waldoboro have lost a great selectman,” Selectman Becky Maxwell said, summing up the feelings of the board.
