Maine School Administrative District 40 hired School Union 132 superintendent Francis Boynton as superintendent on Jan. 29. The two-year contract will begin July 1.
The District includes Adult Education, the Friendship Village School, Medomak Village School, Medomak Valley High School, Miller School, Prescott Memorial School, Rivers Alternative Middle School, Union Elementary School and Warren Community School.
Boynton will continue with his position at School Union 132 until June 30. Jefferson, which is under his jurisdiction, has joined with School Union 74 to form the Central Lincoln County School System.
Boynton is continuing to work with the Jefferson Village School in facilitating a state funded new school project. Boynton will continue the dialogue over the concept plan for the new school project during a public forum and meeting of the Jefferson School Board on Feb. 4.
Meanwhile, current MSAD 40 superintendent, Pamela Carnahan is involved in various projects in the school district including the forthcoming 2009-10 budget. She will continue with MSAD 40 until June 30.
Carnahan feels the District has come a long way during her five-year tenure. The District was at risk of losing its accreditation following a Dept. of Education review, she said. The District needed to meet several requirements on a state DOE document over 60 pages in length.
According to Carnahan, they had overspent on their budget and had to take in a loan.
“We were able to pay off that loan two years ahead of time,” Carnahan said.
Having also met a long check list of safety issues, the District met all requirements and was removed from the state department warning track. Carnahan added that they instituted several areas of instruction and curriculum choices at the high school, a district wide assessment program and a new science program.
Carnahan is particularly satisfied with the new Medomak Middle School.
“It’s such a visual monument to the community,” she said, adding that the stormy days prior to Carnahan joining MSAD 40 have evened out. “I think we have emerged a stronger school district because of everybody’s efforts.”
She expects Boynton will continue to build on these efforts and work with the greater MSAD 40 community in maintaining quality education.
