For the second year in a row, the annual Bremen Fire Department Open House will be held in conjunction with the Bremen Town House’s annual Chocolate Sunday.
The open house will be held from 1-4 p.m., Sun., Aug. 1 at the Bremen fire station on Rt. 32.
“It’s a fun day for kids, and an informative day for adults,” said Bremen Fire Department Lt. John Briggs. “We’re going to show what being a volunteer firefighter is all about.”
The department will not be soliciting any funds at the event, Briggs said. The open house is a chance for members of the department to meet people in the community and answer any questions they may have.
“We love to show off our equipment,” Briggs said. “Through federal grants, we have one of the most sophisticated extrication rigs in the county.”
The extrication gear will be put into use during a demonstration at the open house. Rescuers will save a “victim” from a junked car to show visitors how all of the gear works.
There will also be gifts for children in attendance. Kids will also be able to work one of the fire hoses, with the assistance of a firefighter, of course. Kids will also be able to wear and use one of the department’s backpack fire extinguishers, and play in the spray from one of the department’s trucks.
The department will also be talking about their “If we can’t find you, we can’t help you” program, in which they install house numbers in front of houses at no charge to the homeowner.
The large blue signs make it easier for rescuers to tell which house is which, and are reflective, so they’re especially important at night, Briggs said.
