An elderly Coopers Mills woman died Friday afternoon after her car crossed the centerline and collided with a second vehicle head-on near the Whitefield-Windsor town line on Rt. 17.
According to Maine State Police, 76 year old Helen Hinckley died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the second car, Rita Cushman, 66, of Livermore Falls, was seriously injured and taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Trooper Christopher Rogers said Hinckley might have suffered a medical issue prior to the crash. Route 17 was closed at the crash site for over two hours, reopening just after 4 p.m.
Initial reports said four vehicles were involved, but Rogers said only Hinckley’s and Cushman’s cars collided – the two other vehicles had stopped at the crash site.
