The Damariscotta Police Department summonsed James Baker, 20, of Somerville and John P. Hourihan, 20, of Damariscotta, on Aug. 20, for two counts each of Class D forgery.
Eight men now face charges in connection with a forgery investigation spread across several counties and municipalities. Police previously arrested Hourihan and four others on charges of aggravated forgery, a Class B felony, and Baker and two others face lesser, Class D forgery charges.
Baker and Hourihan allegedly cashed fraudulent payroll checks at Hannaford locations in Damariscotta and Rockland, Damariscotta Police Chief Steven Drake said Aug. 26.
The investigation “continues to grow,” Drake said, and the department plans to summons Hourihan and Baker again for allegedly passing counterfeit $50 bills in Augusta.
Drake said he hopes to meet with District Attorney Geoff Rushlau and representatives of all the agencies involved to coordinate the continuing investigation and eventual prosecution of the case.
