Damariscotta Police officers came to Great Salt Bay Community School April 30 to hand out “junior officer” badges and visit with students.
The visit was part of a collaborative effort between the department and the school.
The department will periodically visit the school with the goal of building “a positive rapport and relationship with our students and staff,” Great Salt Bay Community School Principal Jeff Boston wrote in an April 24 letter to parents.
“It is important for our students to understand these officers are just like you and me, and at times their job puts them in difficult situations but they perform their duties to protect and ensure our community is safe,” Boston wrote.
Curious students mobbed Damariscotta Police Chief Chad Andrews and Patrol Officer Aaron Beck at recess April 30.
The students eagerly waited in line to receive the junior officer stickers and talk with the officers.
Andrews said the interaction creates “a good opportunity for the kids to get to know us and for us to get to know them.”
