Damariscotta officials reminded downtown property owners to check their buildings for ice after a large chunk fell from one building Jan. 3, almost hitting someone.
The property owners are responsible for removing hazardous ice buildup and for any ice that falls from their buildings, according to Damariscotta Code Enforcement Officer Stan Waltz.
Two years ago, heavy chunks of ice falling from two downtown apartment buildings, known as the Day Block and Harbor View Apartments, damaged at least three parked cars. Ralph Doering Jr. owns both buildings.
The ice could have seriously injured or killed someone if the cars had been occupied or if the ice had struck a pedestrian, Damariscotta Police officers said at the time.
