The Hannaford supermarket in Damariscotta is open following a small fire in the area of the seafood department and the subsequent evacuation of the store.
The fire started in a small oven, Damariscotta Fire Chief John Roberts said. Hannaford employees pulled the alarm, put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and evacuated the store.
Damariscotta firefighters cleared the smoke and contacted the Maine Department of Agriculture, standard practice for any situation involving the discharge of dry chemicals around food, Roberts said. He described the damage as minimal.
The call came in at 3:18 p.m., Roberts said. The store reopened at 4:08 p.m.
A crowd of customers and employees waited out the response outside the store.
