Damariscotta Police summonsed 33-year-old Damariscotta resident Alan Donahue for distracted driving, a civil offense, after a two-vehicle accident May 7.
Donahue was traveling west on Biscay Road in his 2006 GMC pickup at about 7:48 a.m. While retrieving a cigarette from the vehicle’s center console, he veered into the opposite traffic lane, Damariscotta Police Officer Jennifer Mitkus said.
Donahue attempted to correct the vehicle, but was unable to do so before colliding with an eastbound Toyota Camry. “He was partially still in the other lane at the time of the crash,” Mitkus said.
The impact tore a wheel off Donahue’s truck and badly damaged both vehicles.
The Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service transported Donahue to Miles Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. The operator of the Camry, 19-year-old Damariscotta resident Ashley Sodergren, was unhurt.
Sodergren was wearing a seatbelt; Donahue was not, Mitkus said. The airbags deployed in both vehicles.
The Damariscotta Fire Dept. also responded to the scene.
