Yarmouth developer Joe DeLois has had permits for the multi-use project now under construction on Rt. 1 in Wiscasset since 2006. Contractors recently removed a house on the property across the street from Shaw’s supermarket and on Nov. 23 they were clearing and prepping the site.
According to Jeffrey Hinderliter, Director of Planning and Development, DeLois has had some difficulties in getting the project under way, including an impact fee imposed by the Maine Dept. of Transportation (MDOT).
The Lincoln County News was unable to locate DeLois for comment, but Hinderliter said what delayed the project so long was likely a combination of the MDOT fee cost and economic reasons. The most recent permit approval was granted in early spring this year, he said.
Hinderliter said the multi-use project, which will include a McDonald’s restaurant, a Shell gas station and a First Federal Savings Bank, could open by next spring.
