A golf cart operator apparently lost control of his vehicle at the Newcastle-Damariscotta Memorial Day parade on May 28, striking four Cub Scouts and sending one to the hospital, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
The accident is the second recent incident involving a motorized vehicle in an area parade. The first occurred during the Pumpkinfest parade in October 2011 and resulted in the death of the vehicle operator. The cause was determined to be equipment failure, according to a report released by the LCSO.
The May 28 incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. as the annual parade made its way down Mills Road in in Newcastle, according to the LCSO. The one boy was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital for treatment of “non-life threatening injuries,” according to the LCSO. The others were treated at the scene.
The golf cart operator was identified as Frazier Hart, 55, of Newcastle.
The LSCO was assisted at the scene by the Newcastle Fire Dept. and CLC Ambulance Service.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Lincoln County News will continue to follow any developments in this story and a detailed account will be featured in the print and e-editions this week.
