Hannaford Supermarkets announces its prices on thousands of items are lower this holiday season, with some staples seeing double-digit declines from a year ago.
The food inflation trends of 2008 have reversed and Hannaford has lowered regular prices on 10,000 items and offered more aggressive specials, such as free item offers tied with holiday giving, said Michael Norton, Hannaford spokesperson.
“Good prices never go out of style in the grocery store and the holiday season of 2009 at Hannaford is presenting us with many more opportunities to drop prices,” Norton said.
Some examples:
Turkey is 40-cents a pound, a 10-year low, compared with 47-cents last year.
Produce prices are down 6 percent, with tomatoes, peppers, grapes, melons and pears, among many items seeing double-digit declines.
Holiday meal item prices are down 15 percent. (Examples from a 30-item holiday basket are stuffing at 89-cents compared with $1.25 last year and chocolate morsels at $2 versus $2.50 last year.)
Weekly specials and in-store programs also are richer this year. The Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger program, for example, offers a coupon book valued at $50 when customers purchase and donate a “fund a feast” box loaded with food essentials that local pantries have identified as most needed. Beginning Nov. 29, the coupon book is available for a direct donation of $5 to regional food banks.
Hannaford Supermarkets, based in Scarborough, operates 171 stores and employs 27,000 associates in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
