Residents of Bristol and South Bristol may want to plan a little more time to travel between the towns as construction work begins on Harrington Road.
Hagar Enterprises Inc., of Damariscotta, will begin work on the Little Falls Brook Bridge replacement project on Harrington Road in Bristol Monday, Sept. 14. Jason Stetson, the Maine Department of Transportation’s resident engineer for the project, said the goal is to widen a narrow culvert at the site to improve stream flow and help prevent the road from flooding during heavy rains.
Harrington Road will be reduced to a single lane at the construction site during daylight hours from Sept. 14 to 21. The road will close completely to through traffic approximately 2.25 miles east of the intersection with Route 129 and 0.25 miles west of the intersection with Fir Hollow Road from Sept. 21 to Oct. 17. During that time, Hagar Enterprises will replace the current structure with a steel plate arch with concrete footing to help increase stability.
In addition, the road in the immediate vicinity of the bridge will be paved and the drainage in the ditches will be improved.
While the road is closed, Talbot said Routes 129 and 130 will serve as a 14-mile detour.
Emergency services and schools in the area were notified in advance of the road closure so contingency plans could be made.
Central Lincoln County School System Superintendent Steve Bailey said the construction will impact bus routes, however, plans are in place to ensure a smooth transition.
“There is a group of students who live on the west side of the road closure that we need to pick up,” Bailey said. “It will just be a minor inconvenience for 28 days.”

Bailey said the affected students will be picked up either later or earlier to allow for the detour. The route will be determined in the weeks leading up to the closure by Bailey, Bristol Consolidated School Principal Jennifer Ribeiro, and bus route supervisor Angela Burns.
Talbot said there are no foreseeable obstacles to delay the completion of the project.
“Even if there is inclement weather, we should be able to stick to this schedule and get things wrapped up before the end of October,” Talbot said.
Updates on the project will be posted on the Hagar Enterprises Inc. Facebook page.
