Damariscotta Police Dept. officers arrested Nathan Herald for the second time this month in connection with about 10 motor vehicle burglaries on Chapman, Church and Elm streets.
Officers Aaron Beck and Jennifer Mitkus arrested Herald, 22, of Damariscotta, on April 24, Acting Police Chief Chad Andrews said.
Herald faces four charges of burglary of motor vehicle, three charges of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and one charge each of unlawful possession of a schedule Y drug and violation of conditions of release, Andrews said. Additional charges are pending.
The drug charge stems from the recovery of two meprobamate (anti-anxiety) pills during a search of Herald at Two Bridges Regional Jail.
Herald also faces charges of burglary, burglary of motor vehicle and refusing to submit to arrest or detention dating to his April 4 arrest at a Pleasant Street home.
The police recovered a large array of stolen items, including two GPS units, an XM radio receiver, CDs, DVDs and other electronics, Andrews said. Theft victims have claimed some items, but many others remain at the station.
The department encourages anyone missing items from a vehicle to call 563-1909.
Herald allegedly stole the items from about 10 unlocked cars early April 21, according to Andrews. Beck chased Herald from the scene, but Herald initially eluded capture.
The department linked items from the scene, including a bicycle, to Herald in the days before his arrest, Andrews said.
Beck, the investigating officer, “did a fantastic job,” Andrews said.
As of April 25 at 11 a.m., Herald remains at Two Bridges Regional Jail, where, pending a court appearance, he is being held without bail on the violation of conditions of release charge.
Bail on the other charges is set at $1000 cash, a jail employee said.
Herald could not be reached for comment.
