Jefferson fire crews extinguished a brush fire in Jefferson July 22 in less than an hour thanks to the efforts of the property owner, said Jefferson Fire Chief Walter Morris.
The property owner near the end of Fox Road, off Rt. 17, in Jefferson, reported the fire around 5:30 p.m. and began hauling buckets of water to the scene, Morris said.
She was able to stop the fire from spreading into areas of the woods with lots of dead branches where it would have spread quickly, he said.
Jefferson firefighters don’t know exactly how the fire started, but the area contained “signs that kids have been using it as hangout,” Morris said. Firefighters found towels, an old chair, soda cans – no alcohol – and many cigarette butts at the scene, he said.
The fire covered about one-half to three-quarters of an acre and took just under an hour to extinguish, Morris said. No one was injured and no property was damaged.
