With numerous roads closed due to storm damage and nightfall rapidly approaching, the Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency (LCEMA) strongly encourages residents to stay off the roads Sun. night.
With fresh incidents of trees and wires blocking roads continuing, the possibility exists for a motorist to become involved in a collision with a downed tree that has no fire dept. personnel on scene yet to warn drivers of the danger. This possibility increases after nightfall.
Many of the roads are blocked by trees with electrical wires entangled in them, a situation that requires firefighters to wait for a crew from Central Maine Power (CMP) to clear the scene for safety. With almost 119,000 Maine homes without power at the time of this posting, and 2000 of them in Lincoln County, it could take some time before CMP crews will be able to respond to all of the incidents.
By staying off the roads, residents will also give CMP and first responders a chance to make repairs and clear areas without being hampered by unnecessary traffic.
The Lincoln County News website has been tracking Tropical Storm Irene all day on Sunday, and attempts were made to keep up with the list of road closures. But for every road closure we posted, two more were closed while we were posting. That trend is continuing, and a complete, verified account of road closures has been impossible to maintain.
Suffice it to say that “you can’t get there from here” may be more fact than fiction in Lincoln County right now.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of this event and post any additional information here as soon as it becomes available.
