A local resident is helping to plan a memorial walk in Lincoln County to support pancreatic cancer research and raise awareness.
Khristie Moody, of Wiscasset, will host the event in Nobleboro with the walk starting at the Moody Homestead, Ledgy Acres, 555 East Pond Rd.
The walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25 and begin at 11 a.m. Moody said the event is held in memory of her grandmother, Ona H. Moody, who passed away Oct. 25, 2005.
“It’s a way to celebrate her life and raise money for a good cause,” Moody said.
According to Moody, funds raised from the event will go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
The action network is a nationwide group dedicated towards working together to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
“Everything we get goes directly to PanCAN,” Moody said.
The memorial walk consists of a distance of five miles, but participants can choose how far they want to go.
Moody said in order to allow those with mobility issues to take part in the event there will be no required distance.
“People do not have to walk the whole thing,” she said.
Additionally, there will be transportation on hand to move participants around as needed.
The upcoming memorial event will not be the first Moody has hosted in memory of her grandmother. Five years ago she hosted a walk at the same location.
According to Moody, the previous walk featured 10 to 12 participants and raised $1,700 for PanCAN.
She said she is looking to host the walk every five years and hopes it can serve as a way to expand pancreatic cancer awareness in the state.
“We want to bring it to Maine. This is a start,” Moody said.
Moody said she is looking forward to the walk.
“I am excited to see the outcome,” Moody said.
In addition to the memorial walk in Nobleboro, there is another pancreatic cancer awareness event scheduled for the region on Sunday, Oct. 25.
A purple light ceremony is scheduled to take place in the Town Mall at Brunswick Town Common.
The Brunswick ceremony is set to begin at 5 p.m.
