Maia Zewert has joined the staff of The Lincoln County News as a general assignment reporter. Zewert will cover the towns of Bristol, Damariscotta, Newcastle, and South Bristol, and assist elsewhere as necessary.
Zewert, of Damariscotta, graduated in May from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa with a degree in journalism and mass communication and English. Her previous experience includes two summers as the editorial summer intern with the Harlan Newspapers in Harlan, Iowa and four years working for the Iowa State Daily.
Zewert’s career in journalism started her senior year in high school when she joined the online school paper. One of the articles she wrote about the anatomy class’s dissection unit garnered the attention of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The animal rights organization donated software that included a virtual dissection program for future classes to use.
When applying for full-time jobs, Zewert thought it best to live Iowa State University’s motto of “choose your adventure” and apply for jobs only in states she had never visited before, including Maine. The Lincoln County News stood out due to the community focus.
“I am excited to welcome Maia to the team,” said LCN Editor Sherwood Olin. “Her clips were strong, she had a great interview; she was just an outstanding candidate all-around. We had to wait a few months for her while she finished a writing workshop in Ireland this summer, but we thought she was worth the wait.”
A graduate of a small-town high school, Zewert appreciates the importance of community and looks forward to getting involved with Lincoln County in addition to her work with the paper.
