Eleven Newcastle residents authorized a $1.06 million secondary education budget at a special town meeting May 9 in the Great Salt Bay Community School cafeteria.
The citizens passed the budget quickly and without any significant debate.
The 2012-2013 budget totals $20,062 more than the 2011-2012 budget. The local share of the 2012-2013 budget totals $42,728 more than that of the 2011-2012 budget.
Increases in special education ($33,288), transportation ($5758) and system administration ($3273); offset by decreases in regular instruction ($20,444), contingency ($1118) and student and staff support ($695), account for the changes to the budget.
The local share is higher partly because the town received a one-time injection of $16,604 in federal jobs bill funds in 2011-2012.
