Mary Bowers, the longtime superintendent of the Great Salt Bay Sanitary District, resigned her position during a special board of directors meeting Wednesday.
Bowers said she made the move to accept what she called “another opportunity.”
Board Chairman Alan Ray said Bowers called the meeting saying the board did not want her to go.
“She has been there since the district was formed. She is great with the contractors, the bankers, and the public utility people. She is special. She is excellent on her job. We wish her the best,” said Ray.
The GSB Sanitary District is a publicly owned, quasi-municipal utility organized to provide safe drinking water in Damariscotta and Newcastle. It also provides wastewater treatment services for Damariscotta, Newcastle and Nobleboro.
Board member Robert Whear said the meeting was just 15 minutes long. “We wanted her to stay,” he said.
