Yellowfront grocery owner Jeff Pierce confirmed that customer checks were among the items stolen, along with cash proceeds from Friday sales during a burglary at his Damariscotta business June 6.
Pierce said all checks were endorsed on the back “with my stamp”, but he is concerned because he heard that some sophisticated thieves can wash off ink on the checks and reuse them.
“If customers want to call their bank and stop payment, I don’t think there will be a charge on a stolen check,” Pierce said.
Pierce also wants to reassure his customers who used their debit or credit cards on June 5 that there was “no breach” of their information.
“If anyone wants to rewrite a check that is their option,” he said. “I’m not pushing that, but if anyone feels they want to rewrite me a check that would be fine with me.”
