A pickup truck towing a trailer struck and killed a 300- to 400-pound moose on Gardiner Road (Route 27) in Dresden Tuesday night, June 30.
David Litchfield, 28, of Dresden, was driving a 2002 GMC 3/4-ton pickup south on Gardiner Road around 8:30 p.m. when the moose entered the road in front of the vehicle, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver braked in an attempt to avoid the moose, but it was too late, according to Deputy Aaron Beck. The vehicle struck and killed the moose and the impact totaled the truck. Litchfield was not injured. Steele’s Landscaping, of Wiscasset, owns the vehicle.
Beck estimated the moose’s age at a year or less and its weight at 300-400 pounds.
The accident reduced traffic to one lane on Gardiner Road. The Dresden Fire Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
