On Nov. 8, Maine voters will decide whether to change the years of Maine’s constitutionally mandated congressional redistricting.
Currently, the national census is conducted every 10 years on the “zero years” – 2000, 2010, 2020, etc. – and Maine’s congressional must be redrawn by the “three years” – 2003, 2013, 2023, etc.
With improved technology, states are able to tally census data and draw possibilities for new districts faster, so most states conduct their redistricting on the “one years” – 2001, 2011, 2021, etc.
Approval of Question 4 alters Maine’s constitutional and moves Maine’s redistricting deadline to the “one years.”
The amendment was sponsored by both Republicans and Democrats and passed the legislature with bipartisan support.
