In a budget validation referendum June 14, residents from the eight communities of Sheepscot Valley Regional School Union 12 (Alna, Wiscasset, Westport Island, Palermo, Somerville, Whitefield, Windsor, and Chelsea) approved the fiscal year 2012 spending plan but defeated a proposal to purchase an administrative office property for the district.
The $25,130,772 budget, which was given preliminary thumbs up at a June 4 meeting in Windsor by residents, passed by a 70-vote margin of 388-318.
The budget passed in all but one town, Wiscasset, which voted against the plan by a 63-vote margin.
Plans to purchase the RSU 12 central office in Whitefield for $160,000 was also defeated by 63 votes, by district residents.
In Lincoln County, Alna, Westport Island, and Whitefield all approved the budget and will have a “minimal impact” on local mil rates, said RSU 12 Supt. Greg Potter in previous comments.
The numbers represent a slight increase – “one half of one percent,” said Potter, in town contributions for the fiscal year 2012.
