Long-time Reunion Station diner Bill Morgner has been making gingerbread houses with his daughter, Allie, for the past four years. After each holiday, Bill usually takes his and his daughter’s creation to Midcoast Energy, where co-workers smash it to bits and gorge on its sticky sweetness.
This year, the Morgners decided to do something different. They made a table-sized replica of he Reunion Station restaurant in Damariscotta, which is located off Rt. 1 on the edge of town. He said it took eight pounds of confectioner’s sugar and 16 cups of gingerbread.
The pair used the free global mapping software “Google Earth” to visualize the restaurant’s roof. Wait staff joked that Morgener knows the restaurant well enough, he could have created the “Gingerbread Station” completely from memory.
“We just do it for fun,” Morgner said on Friday as he and his family waited for their order. “All of it is edible, even the railings.”
He and his daughter made a log cabin the first time, followed by a fishing wharf in the second year. Last year they made a replica of Pemaquid Lighthouse.
They gave the Gingerbread Station to restaurant owners Dale and Sharlene Feltis, who have decided to raffle off the replica. The restaurant owners both said they plan to give all the money from the raffle to Family Holiday Wishes of Damariscotta to help others in need.
Raffle tickets can be purchased for $1 each or 6 for $5. To buy a ticket, contact either Dale or Sharlene at 563-5557 or stop by the restaurant.
